How to apply for PIP (UK)
A calm, step-by-step overview of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) application process. This page is reference-only — it is not legal, medical, or benefits advice. Always check official sources for the most up-to-date information.
What is PIP?
Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a UK benefit for people aged 16 to State Pension age whose health condition or disability affects daily living or mobility. It is not means-tested, so your income, savings, and employment status do not affect whether you can claim.
PIP has two components: a daily living component (for help with everyday tasks like preparing food, washing, dressing, and managing money) and a mobility component (for help getting around). You can receive one or both, each at either a standard or enhanced rate, depending on how many points you are awarded.
Decisions are based on how your condition affects you in everyday activities — not on your diagnosis alone. Two people with the same condition may receive different outcomes because PIP looks at the practical impact on your daily life.
